Taking the "Die" Out of "Diet"
We've pretty much all heard those jokes, right?
"There's a reason why it starts with die!" Hahahahaha...
*uncontrollable laughter turned to sobbing*
As a dietitian, this is a commonly used word in my vocabulary. I mean, it's part of my job title. And I'm not going to shy away from it.
I don't want to make diet a good or bad word, but I do want to disclose what I mean when I say "diet." Because I don't know if I will ever NOT be able to say it. I want to make diet a neutral word - just a concept to describe what we typically eat.
When I ask you about your diet, or talk about my diet, I'm talking about everything that is put in your mouth. No matter what it is.
Chicken - part of a diet.
Popcorn - part of a diet.
Chocolate - part of a diet. (Thank goodness!)
Heck, McDonald's is part of a diet, too!
It can be unrealistic to say you would never go back to (insert favorite fast food joint here) once you are ready to make some eating and lifestyle changes. That is crazy and UNREALISTIC.
The plan is to talk about how it is incorporated in your life, and to make sure the food doesn't hold any power over you.
So, diet is about all the collective foods and beverages you include in your lifestyle. When we work together and I ask you about your diet, I don't want you to think about the carrots, apples, kale, etc. that you eat.
We should- and will- be talking about eeeeeeeverything.
This is how we make strides in altering your eating and lifestyle habits to help you reach satisfaction and peace with your diet.
Let's start taking away the stigma of the dreaded D-word to lose it's power over you. It doesn't mean a complication of the foods you are and "can't" eat.
In our initial consultation appointment, we will spend the majority of the time talking about your diet in the past, the diet you currently have, and the diet you think you should have. We talk about your habits growing up, the habits you like, and the habits you want to change.
